I KEEP a little blog, a bookshelf really, that focuses on modern writing, i.e. writing from this century. I always find there is quite a big shelf between the very good and the rest. By the very good I mean something like this. And by the very inflated I mean something like this or this. I don’t usually slag off much because the intention is to discover and encourage good writing. Nor do I approve of reviews that give away too much, so I tend to write them as I go. The best ones are really an introduction to…They all start with the opening paragraph of the text, which is the first hurdle.
